Share Recovery Codes Securely

Transmit backup and recovery codes for two-factor authentication through encrypted links that disappear after viewing.

The problem

Recovery codes are the last line of defense when primary authentication fails. Storing them in shared documents, email threads, or password-protected spreadsheets creates multiple points of exposure. If an attacker finds recovery codes alongside compromised login credentials, they bypass two-factor authentication entirely — the exact scenario 2FA was designed to prevent.

How Vaulted helps

Vaulted encrypts your recovery codes in the browser with AES-256-GCM and generates a self-destructing link. Once the recipient saves the codes to their password manager, the link expires. The zero-knowledge architecture means the codes never exist in plaintext on any server, providing a secure handoff channel.

How to do it

  1. Paste your backup or recovery codes into Vaulted
  2. Set a one-view limit to ensure only the intended recipient can access them
  3. Share the encrypted link with the person who needs the recovery codes
  4. They save the codes securely, and the link is permanently destroyed
