Share Two-Factor Backup Codes Securely

Transmit 2FA backup and recovery codes through encrypted links that disappear after viewing.

The problem

Two-factor backup codes are the last-resort recovery path for accounts. Storing them in plaintext emails or shared documents defeats the purpose of multi-factor authentication entirely. If an attacker finds these codes alongside a compromised password, 2FA provides no additional protection.

How Vaulted helps

Vaulted encrypts your backup codes client-side with AES-256-GCM before they leave your device. The self-destructing link ensures the codes are available only long enough for the recipient to save them securely. Zero-knowledge architecture means Vaulted never has access to the plaintext codes.

How to do it

  1. Paste your 2FA backup codes into Vaulted
  2. Set a one-view expiration for maximum security
  3. Share the link with the person who needs account recovery access
  4. They save the codes in their password manager, and the link self-destructs
